Describe the work you have done in this class and/or discuss what you have learned about the topic of journalism in a democratic society?
I’ve done a lot of different types of projects in this class throughout the whole year. From podcasts about student-led projects like the freshperson 20% project to exhibitions exhibiting different projects, such as the sophomore physics exhibitions with optics, and even events that happened in the larger community, like the story I wrote about the local fundraisers supporting Ukraine in a great time of need. After doing so many different types of projects I've fallen into the habit of looking for newsworthy things in any event that I attend and I've learned to keep my ears open for newsworthy events. This semester, some of my best work is the MUN after brief that I wrote, the Sophomore inspires week that I collaborated with my fellow sophomore quill members on, the recent freshperson camping trip to bears ears, the stories about Tina and Suzy leaving AHS, and, as I already mentioned, the Ukraine fundraising story. Through podcasting, I’ve been able to get the AHS student’s voices even more directly in my stories, like the Standardized testing podcast Illyria and I did to hear students' opinions about the usefulness of the tests while still adding useful information that the AHS public should know about the objective usefulness of the testing. |

If you are returning to the Quill next year, reflect on the next steps or goals you have moving forward in your work as a student journalist?
I am very certain I will be returning to the Quill next year unless an unforeseen scheduling conflict arises. Just from last semester to this semester I feel like I’ve taken on more roles and expanded the type of news I create. An example of this is how I now work with podcasts and how I would occasionally act in videos and once even helped film and edit a video for the quill. Next year I want to expand my journalistic horizons even further, by possibly taking over the Quill website. I also want to participate in more fun videos, which I found to be quite entertaining, while also maintaining some of the podcasts, though perhaps tag-teaming with another group of Quillspreys for even more engaging content. And finally, I hope that in addition to my as a reporter gathering the news that I will be able to become one of the quills editors and help in organizing the layout of print issues and helping with weekly emails out. This seems like a lot to take on, however, I would do a little of each or go back and forth. Some of the jobs, such as editor or QuillCaster, can be handled by multiple people, and ‘many hands make light work’. |
