I have discovered that progress for this project is much slower going than I originally thought, however I have managed to accomplish a few things. First and foremost, I have created a petition to ban plastic bags in Durango and I managed to get in contact with someone who had tried to ban plastic bags in Durango in the past, but failed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. And secondly, I began to research local restaurants single use plastic habits so I can then contact them. The only thing I seem to be having trouble with is finding out locations that I can "protest" at.

Last Thursday I was able to create a logo (above) and a poster for when I "protest" in front of a large plastic using corporation to raise awareness against plastic. I was also able to plan a time for the protest. This week I will email local business owners and city council. But more specifically, today I'll draft two emails, one for the businesses and two for the city council. And I'll hopefully be able to print and hang posters up around the school.
1. How did I come to choose my 20% project idea?
The two main reasons I chose to combat plastic use in Durango for the 20% project are, one because I am an impassioned environmentalist. I am constantly learning about climate change and I am always looking for new ways to make my life and my community's carbon footprint smaller, which I intend to do with this project. And second, no one loathes more than I to see plastic bags and water bottles choking our rivers and blowing about in wild, otherwise beautiful places. In accordance with this second reason, I constantly feel guilty for using plastic, and personally responsible when I see plastic litter. So now I have made it my purpose to make single use plastic harder to use, because currently it's thoughtlessly easy to use. 2. What are my goals for this week? For this week, my goals are to read 2 books about plastic pollution, it's effects, and ways to expel single use plastics from life. I plan on starting a single use plastic boycott and "protesting", for want of a better word, in front of a large corporation to raise anti-plastic awareness. I will also start contacting local businesses to see how they are avoiding plastic and to help them use even less than they are now. And finally, I need to send an email to the Durango city council. 3. What are my specific measurable goals for today? Today I will draft an email to the Durango city council, and I will organize a "protest" by making posters, setting the date and time, gathering information, and making signs, and finally I will compile a list of local businesses to contact. Last Tuesday the 20th we started the 20% project. I decided to focus my project on Single use plastic use in Durango, My goal is lower the amount of plastic used in Durango, and perhaps even eliminate it's use entirely. This may seem like a lot to do, but I am going to give it my all for the next 5 weeks.
